Courage, Justice, Equal Freedom

“A life shaped by struggle, leadership, and courage, dedicated to fighting injustice and standing for equal rights for all Congolese.”

Col. Jacques K. Kamanzi

Founder and Chairman of the Human Rights Protection Front (HRPF – SHUJAA)

Col. Jacques K. KAMANZI is a Congolese citizen, born into a Kinyarwanda-speaking community in eastern DRC. He holds a master’s degree in leadership and management.

He received his initial military training with the RPA, the former armed wing of the RPF’s Inkotanyi, which fought to overthrow the government of Rwandan President Juvenal Habyarimana in 1994 during the Rwandan genocide against the Tutsi.

Just one year after the liberation of Rwanda, Col. Jacques set out to fight for the rights of his community, victims of discrimination based on ethnicity and minority status. In 1996, he crossed the border between Congo and Rwanda as a member of the Alliance of Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Congo (ADFLC), led by Laurent-Désiré Kabila, in what was then Zaïre, now the Democratic Republic of Congo.

A year later, former DRC president Laurent-Désiré Kabila took power and ordered all Kinyarwanda-speaking soldiers and their communities to leave the DRC and settle in Rwanda, labeling them Rwandans, which created even more problems than before.

These problems have become more serious as successive governments in the DRC have failed to resolve them, instead increasing corruption and division, which in turn has led to endless conflicts. Having observed that the problem in the DRC lies in bad leadership and poor governance, he decided to establish a political party, the Human Rights Protection Front (HRPF–SHUJAA), in order to fight for his rights and treat all Congolese equally.
